What are injectables?

There are two main types of injectables: neurotoxins and dermal fillers. The difference is linked to your reason for anti-wrinkle treatment. Do you want to reverse existing wrinkles or prevent them from getting worse? Or do you want to improve the volume of your face, cheeks or lips?

Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers are a gel-based treatment. They are injected into your skin and are designed to create volume and reduce wrinkles. The most well-known fillers are dermal lip fillers.

Neurotoxins: Neurotoxin injections relax the muscles of your face. They are made from purified botulinum toxin. It’s injected in extremely small concentrations. By paralysing the muscles of your face, they can’t contract any more, and that’s why your wrinkles are less visible.

Improving the volume of your lips and face?

Wrinkles form when your natural collagen (1) and hyaluronic acid (2) start to decrease. This typically happens as we get older. But there are other factors at play as well, such as sun exposure, disease, lifestyle and genetics.

Collagen provides skin structure (1)

Hyaluronic acid provides skin volume (2)

Anti wrinkle injections Perth - Dr Jeremy Rawlins
"Dermal fillers are gel-based and injected just below the surface of your skin to fill lines and wrinkles from the inside out. This results in smoother skin and a more youthful appearance. Fillers are also frequently used to augment and recontour the lower, upper and middle cheeks to create a more youthful look."
Dr Jeremy Rawlins
Lip fillers are used for lip augmentation when you have thin lips. They increase your lip volume.

Prevent wrinkles from worsening?

Do you show early signs of wrinkles and do you want to prevent them from getting worse? Then anti-wrinkle injections will help.
"Some of us only see our first wrinkles when we are in our forties. Others start noticing small lines earlier. When we inject very small concentrations of botulinum in your facial muscles, the overlying skin softens and reduces your wrinkles making them less visible. It is a perfect treatment to prevent wrinkles from deepening."
Mr Jeremy Rawlins
Neurotoxins such as botulinum are used for non-cosmetic reasons too. It is used to treat excessive sweating, migraines, muscular disorders, and some bladder and bowel disorders.

How often do you need injectables?

Dermal fillers frequency

There are many types of dermal fillers, and the longevity and frequency of your filler treatment depends on which type and brand you have chosen.
Anti-wrinkle injections Perth
"When your fillers are used to treat lines and wrinkles, on average, they can last anywhere from three to nine months. Lip fillers or lip injections need quicker top-ups; the results can last anywhere from three to six months."
Dr Jeremy Rawlins
Dermal fillers are prescription-only medicines. Therefore, in Australia you will need to make a consultation with a medical doctor, to discuss the best treatment options and brands available.

Anti-wrinkle injections frequency

In general, anti-wrinkle injections last three to four months. The treatment’s longevity and frequency depend mainly on the dose and the area where we inject.
"Once we relax the muscles they contract less, and the fine lines and wrinkles will soften. To see the full effect you will need to wait seven to fourteen days. After three to four months the muscles will slowly regain their function. So repeat treatment is recommended to maintain your desired results."
Mr Jeremy Rawlins
Just like dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections are prescription-only medicines.

Are injectables safe?

Dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are considered to be very safe. However, there are a few situations when you should hold off or not have treatment.
"Pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding should postpone their treatment. When you have recently had a sinus infection, I would recommend holding off as well. Same for when your skin is inflamed; it is better to wait until the problem has resolved. People with bleeding disorders shouldn’t undergo treatment at all."

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Dr Jeremy Rawlins for injectables?

Why go to a plastic surgeon for cosmetic injectables?

Injectables are prescription-only and as the word implies are injected under your skin. Though considered being very safe, if used incorrectly they could damage your skin, and in rare cases cause blindness or serious ill health. That’s why the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia has created a checklist so that you can ask the right questions and do your own research.

"As a registered plastic surgeon and medical professional, I comply with all the TGA guidelines. Before we start treatment, we will discuss your medical history during a consultation to make sure you are not allergic or don’t have a bleeding disorder. At my practice, I only use registered products that are safe and comply with the TGA."
Dr Jeremy Rawlins
Every person is different, so it is important that the people who do the injections know the exact location of your muscles. Knowing anatomy is key to making this a safe procedure.
"So you might wonder, why go to a plastic surgeon for injectables? In case of a complication (such as an infection, bruising, formation of small lumps), you are in the right hands."
Dr Jeremy Rawlins
When you are in your forties, anti-wrinkle injections work as a corrective treatment to eliminate or decrease wrinkles and fine lines. When you are younger, for example in your late twenties-early thirties, you may start cosmetic injectables before these wrinkles start to show.
